Industrial thinking from the very beginning

NAWARO® was founded in 2005 with a clear premise: biomethane not on a small scale, but industrially. High output, maximum efficiency, professional continuous operation – that was the standard from day one. This approach set NAWARO® apart from typical agricultural biomethane projects right from the start and remains the core of the business model to this day.

The milestones

  • 2005 – Founded NAWARO® BioEnergie AG is founded in Leipzig.
  • 2006 – Project launch: BioEnergie Park “Klarsee” With the start of construction in Klarsee, NAWARO® set the first benchmark. With 20 MWel of electrical output and 7 MWth of heat, the plant becomes the largest of its kind in Europe – an investment of around €80 million, delivered by in-house engineers and a growing operations team running 24/7.
  • 2009 – Project launch: BioEnergie Park “Güstrow” Güstrow was the next major project – this time with a focus on heat: 55 MWth thermal output and 1.2 MWel electrical output. Today, Güstrow is one of Europe’s largest biomethane heat plants and clearly demonstrates how industrial biogas production can directly contribute to regional heat supply.
  • 2013 / 2014 – External projects With BioEnergie Park “Forst” (8 MWth) and BioEnergie Park “Kodersdorf” (8 MWth), NAWARO® supported further major projects as a developer and operator.
  • 2023 – Integration of biomethane production in Klarsee BioEnergie Park “Klarsee” was expanded with a biomethane upgrading plant. Since then, around 65 GWh of biomethane has been fed into the grid each year – with expansion potential to up to 320 GWh from 2028.

What two decades mean

Since 2006, NAWARO® has produced more than 1.3 billion m³ of biomethane. With BioEnergie Park “Klarsee”, the company operates one of Europe’s largest biomethane plants – developed, built and continuously operated under our management to this day. Around 40 employees, including 24 in production, ensure stable processes and maximum availability around the clock.

The result: a wealth of experience across the entire value chain – from feedstock procurement and biological and technical process management through to biomethane marketing.

What began as a vision in 2005 is now proven practice: biomethane on an industrial scale works – economically, reliably and with measurable climate benefits. NAWARO® stands for this proof and, on this basis, is helping to shape the next phase of the energy transition.
