Environmental Concept

How environmentally compatible is the NAWARO® concept? The NAWARO® process is a closed cycle. We have developed a model that takes environmental aspects into account at every stage of the added-value chain.

Umweltkonzept

Where do the raw materials come from for energy production? Our contract farmers cultivate energy crops that make a high biogas yield possible. NAWARO® BioEnergie AG supports research projects aimed at raising mass yields and gas production to further increase the efficiency of energy production. At the same time, we also advocate increased biological diversity in agricultural cultivation. It is our goal to play a pioneering role together with our suppliers in the development and use of new energy crops.

Whenever possible, NAWARO® co-operates with local partners involved in cultivation, harvesting and transportation. In this way, the cost and environmental impact of transportation are kept down. A study commissioned by the Deutsche Umwelthilfe [a non-profit environmental aid association], comparing the energy efficiency and climate compatibility of NAWARO® bioenergy plants to single-site facilities, clearly showed that NAWARO® bioenergy plants came out far ahead of many single-site facilities prevalent today. The study was conducted by the Institute for Applied Ecology in Darmstadt and the Leipzig Institute for Energy.

Does energy production in bioenergy plants harm the environment?

Our biogas plants are operated by professionally trained personnel and are monitored around the clock. Maximum safety is thus guaranteed, even in the event of an operational problem. Environmental damage due to operational accidents in a facility are eliminated as far is as humanly possible. Facilities rely on the most modern technology to reduce odor pollution.

The NAWARO® cycle makes possible an efficient recovery both of the waste heat from power generation and of the substrate byproduct from fermentation.

The residues resulting from fermentation are first drained and then returned to the fields as press cake. In this way, we further improve the ecological balance of our plants. The remaining liquid phase is concentrated and reused later as liquid fertilizer. Water created in this process is fed back into the system or recycled to conserve resources.

Transportation concept

Our bioenergy plants depend on a continuous supply of raw materials to be able to produce energy reliably. At full capacity, one plant alone requires approximately 400,000 tons of biomass per year. To reduce trucking and related pollution to a minimum, NAWARO® works together with agricultural suppliers in developing a logistics plan customized for each location. After trucks have brought in substrate, they return loaded with press cake (fermentation byproduct), and thereby avoid empty runs.
