Biogas feed-in

Feeding biogas into networks allows it to be used far from the production site.

After processing, feed-in is essentially carried out by a compressor that raises the pressure level of the biogas to that of the attached pressurized gas line. As a precondition for feed-in, the quality of the biogas must meet local requirements for the quality of gas. The NAWARO® BioEnergie project in Güstrow feeds biogas into the Gaspool network.

Power generation

»Biogas generation is a complex fermentation process managed within our energy plants«

NAWARO® uses cogeneration technology (combined heat and power – CHP) to generate electricity and thermal energy from the combustion of biogas. Germany’s Renewable Energy Law (EEG) guarantees that electricity can be fed into existing power grids, providing the legal basis for concluding long-term supply contracts with grid operators. Biogas can be used for power generation on-site as well as in external CHP plants.

The cycle closes with the subsequent processing of byproducts. The substrates left over from the fermentation process which generates biogas are returned to farmers as fertilizer and can be spread on their fields.

Fuel

Biogas is converted to bio natural gas by accumulating its share of methane to about 96 percent, making it suitable for unlimited use in natural gas-powered vehicles. It can be used in admixture or in pure form. Nearly 100,000 natural gas-powered vehicles have been on the road in Germany since 2010.

The additional use of bio natural gas at some 900 service stations in Germany, already offering natural gas as an alternative fuel, has the potential to significantly reduce emissions in road traffic over the long run, particularly of CO2, nitrogen oxide and particulate matter. This would enable mobility to be more environmentally friendly and mitigate climate change.

Another advantage is that the price of natural gas at service stations last year was on average about 50 percent below the comparable price of gasoline and about 30 percent below the price of diesel.

Proven Quality

Our biofuels have been certified by Peterson Control Union Deutschland GmbH to comply with German sustainability regulations regarding biofuels (Biokraft-NachV) and biomass fuels (BioSt-NachV).
